Voice Performers of BLJ Issue 2
Jacqueline Jules is the author of 30 books for young readers including the “Zapato Power Series”, “Never Say a Mean Word Again”, “Duck for Turkey Day” and the “Sofia Martinez series”. Her poetry has appeared in Cricket Magazine, The Poetry Friday Anthologies, Stories for Children, and dozens of adult journals including Red Booth Review. Gary Harfitt, Ph.D., is currently an Assistant Dean (Experiential Learning) and Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong. He is an award-winning teacher-trainer both at undergraduate and graduate levels. He has widely published in academic journals and published textbooks on teaching and learning poetry. Dr Harfitt has a wide range of research interests including the use of poetry and language arts in the English Language classroom. Moreover, he has been actively involved in community services, including adjudicating the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival since 2002, as well as drama, debate and speech competitions at different schools in Hong Kong. Flora Chan Wai San is a dedicated mum, award-winning professional actress active in television and films throughout Asia since the 90’s, and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Education degree at the University of Hong Kong, where she also recently completed her Master of Education. She began her career in the U.S. as a television news production assistant, while teaching traditional Chinese dance at various Boston elementary schools, before making her way into Hong Kong’s TVB Pearl as television host/writer/producer, and later became a professional actress. Her current passions lie in diverse areas from film-making and acting, to parenting, gifted education, special education, and guidance and counselling. She grew up in Boston, MA and is residing in Hong Kong with her husband and daughter.
Ho Cheung Lee (Peter), Ed.D., resides in Hong Kong where he teaches and writes. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of BALLOONS Lit. Journal (BLJ). In addition to doing poetry and short story writings, he is fond of performing texts. He completed his Trinity Guildhall Grade 8 Performing Text, for which he was awarded an Exhibition Award, followed by his ATCL (Speech & Drama) and LLCM(TD) (Speech & Drama Teaching). Sean Leung is a high school student who has been performing poem-presenting and prose reading since early primary school. He can appreciate poems in four different languages. Originally from Hong Kong, he now resides and studies in Australia.
Curtis Chan Chi-hoi was born in Hong Kong where he resides and studies at secondary school level. Being an active student in class, he currently finds economics his favourite school subject. Also, with passion in speech and drama, he participates in contests on English verse and public speaking. He is awarded at the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival and attained Grade 8 in Performing Text with distinction from Trinity Guildhall.
Z. G. Tomaszewski is a poet, rambler, fisherman, and musician currently living in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Tomaszewski is a founding producer of Lamp Light Musical Festival and co-founder of Great Lakes Commonwealth of Letters. His book All Things Dusk, selected by Li-Young Lee, is forthcoming from HKU Press. The verse he performs here, “Argument”, is his own work.
Danny P. Barbare works as a janitor at a local YMCA. He has been writing poetry for 33 years and has been published locally, nationally, and abroad. His poems have recently appeared in Doxa, Blood and Thunder, Dewpoint, The Watershed, Assisi Online Journal, The Round, as well as many other online and print journals. The verse he performs here, “The Concert”, is his own work.
Richa Gupta is a fifteen-year old girl living in Bangalore, India, with her parents and sister. She started developing an interest in poetry from a young age, and has been honing her interest by writing and composing. She plans to publish a book of a collection of her poetry and short stories. She is also interested in western classical piano, Hindustani vocal and mathematics. The verse she performs here, “Butterfly Wings”, is her own work.
Claire Mei-yee Leung was born and raised in Hong Kong. She received her M.F.A. in creative writing in English at the University of Hong Kong. Her poems have been published in CU Writing in English, HKU Creative Writers, and Imprint 2011. She also writes short stories, such as “The Birthmark” which appeared in CU Writing in English, and plays. Her play “The Grande Barbie Doll” was awarded “Outstanding Script” in the 2010 EMI Secondary School English Drama Festival (Hong Kong). She is currently a home director residing in Chicago with her loving husband.
Justin Lee Chun-hei is currently a Secondary 2 (Grade 8) student in Hong Kong. He loves reading and performing English materials. He was a winner with Honour (scored 90+) at the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival in verse speaking. He attained Grade 8 with distinction in the Trinity Guildhall examination (Performing Text) in his first attempt to take a speech & drama examination.
